U.S. Rep. Eric Cantor, R-Va., and his wife, Diana, will join congressional candidate Steve Obsitnik at Temple Sholom in Greenwich on Sunday.

Obsitnik, a Republican from Stamford, is running against incumbent Jim Himes, a Democrat from Greenwich, in Connecticut’s 4th Congressional District race.

Cantor is the U.S. House of Representatives’ majority leader and is often considered a controversial figure. He is well-liked by Tea Party activists.

Sunday’s event, which will include opening remarks and a meet and greet, will begin at 9:30 a.m. It is not open to the public.

Obsitnik was scheduled to visit Temple Sholom before Cantor’s visit was planned, said Obsitnik spokeswoman Amanda Bergen.

“He’s coming to show his support for Steve,” she said.

Bergen said former U.S. Rep. Chris Shays helped facilitate the joint appearance. Bergen said Shays asked Cantor to visit just a few days ago — after Obsitnik was named a “young gun” by the National Republican Congressional Committee.

Bergen said Shays, who represented the 4th District until 2008 when he was defeated by Himes, is helping Obsitnik with his campaign. There are also plans for Obsitnik’s wife, Suzanne Tager, and Shays’ wife, Betsi, to go door-knocking together, she said.
